The Evil Within is a Survival Horror directed by Shinji Mikami, director of the 4 and best Resident Evil and frequently considered the founder of the horror genre in video games. This game was published by Bethesda Softworks, publisher in particular of The Elder Scrolls saga, and developed by Tango Gameworks Studio, a development studio created by Shinji Mikami for the launch of his project for The Evil Within.

The game therefore presents an already very interesting poster with experience in the industry, but does that mean that the game is worth the cost? Well for me yes! Yes, it is a very subjective answer, but from the different opinions that I could see around me, it seems to be an opinion shared by a majority. I will still not stop there and do a full overview of the game, all obviously without revelations.

In The Evil Within, we play Sebastian Castellanos, a police inspector who is requested at a crime scene in which a dozen murders are reported. Upon arrival at the scene, everything seems deserted, but right after entering the building, Sebastian is knocked out. When he wakes up, we will quickly see that Sebastian has indeed made a one-way ticket in the middle of a nightmare ...

Don't worry, I won't say more about the story.

The Evil Within

The Evil Within is therefore a horror game that wants to be a return to the roots of horror games, which is more than welcome in this rather flat period as for Survival Horror, with a few rare exceptions such as Outlast.

Going back to basics, this means several points that I will develop in the rest of this article:

  • A difficult game
  • A scary game

These two very complementary points are for me the main ones that a horror game must have to be perfect. So what makes The Evil Within a difficult game?

For several reasons ! First of all : munitions. Indeed, you will only have a very limited number of ammunition. At the start of the game, you will not be able to have more than 6 bullets in your pistol, a number that you can increase through the skill system that I will explain later. Did I specify that to kill a zombie, here called a haunted, you have to use more or less 3 bullets?

Another example of its difficulty: resistance. In melee against a Haunted, with no improved health and damage skills with unarmed hands, you can still try to kill him. In a few blows, the zombie will get the better of you, while you will have to manage to deal it with a much larger number of blows to overcome it.

To get you out of different situations, direct confrontation will often not be the best solution. Indeed, there are alternatives to avoid taking too many risks. You will be able to find by searching the areas a little traps which you can defuse to create new ones later, or you can try to bring a haunted one on it, however be careful with the range of the explosion of the mines, for example. The escape is never a very bad idea either. However, while safer, this method will not allow you to collect the likely loot to be looted from the Corpse of the Haunted, usually points that you can later award yourself to improve your skills. Finally, you can perform a stealth attack to knock a zombie down if you can sneak up behind it.

The safest and most effective way to get rid of a haunted one is none other than le feu. If they get burned, death is guaranteed. For this, you have a limited number of matches and with these you can burn flammable decorative elements such as straw bales. If by any means you manage to bring down a haunted one, then you can ignite him directly with a match, and if you face a group of haunted, if they are too close to the one that is burning, they will burn. also.

What is the best way? There is not, it will really depend on the situation which may impose certain choices on you.

The Evil Within

How can gambling be scary? Well first of all for the elements mentioned above: the enemies are very powerful, our capacities are very limited and the situations are really varied, which makes the strategies to be adopted always different, the player is therefore only very rarely confident.

The decorations also contribute to the scary aspect of the game. These are varied throughout the game: you can be in a mansion, in a forest, in caves or even in town, the scenery of these areas is always pretty good. adapted in order not to feel safe or even oppressed.

The Evil Within

The game does not remain a simple horror game, however, offering riddles more or less difficult (and disgusting?) to solve and a story, from what I read, not having finished the game, worked and interesting.

At several points throughout your adventure, you will be able to improve your skills thanks to a superb machine with a completely reassuring appearance ...

When you have taken your seat on this cute chair, you will access the skills panel. Throughout your game, you can pick up in the open world, visible or not, and on corpses, skill points that you can assign to improve your skills.

The Evil Within

Obviously, not everything is perfect in a game, and The Evil Within is no exception. Artificial intelligence enemies sometimes leave something to be desired. A haunted person on the other side of a barrier can be blocked by it, for example. Maybe we can put it on the fact that they are zombies and that they are out of their minds? = P

To conclude on this preview of The Evil Within, if you are a fan of true Survival Horror, then this game is for you, bringing together everything that makes a horror game a good Survival Horror. The gameplay is very varied, all in a lifespan of apparently 15 to 20 hours.

For those who do not like to play this kind of game, but who can still enjoy seeing someone playing it, I offer you my videos, since I do full gameplay on the game, and since I am a real sissy, it gives more than funny reactions!

I hope you liked this preview and convinced you about the quality of this game. My opinions are nonetheless subjective and nothing will prevent you from finding this game worse than for me.
