SWTOR – Factions

The two playable factions of The Old Republic:

  • The Galactic Republic
  • The Sith Empire

A light in the dark ...

For more than twenty thousand years, the Galactic Republic was the most civilized and advanced power in the known galaxy. Ruled by the galactic senate made up of representatives of hundreds of star systems and planets, the republic was the center of peace and progress, a model in the darkness of space.

The revered Jedi order itself swore to defend the Republic, fight darkness, and maintain peace and balance in the galaxy. The Jedi followed these principles for millennia, attracting the admiration of their allies and the hatred of their enemies.

Yet, less than a century ago, the greatest of these enemies made a comeback ...

The assault on the Sith Empire took the republic and the Jedi by surprise, and at the end of a long and difficult war, the republic was destroyed. After the sack of the capital Coruscant by Sith Imperial forces, the Supreme Chancellor and the Senate were forced to sign the painful Coruscant Treaty, demanding that the Republic withdraw its support for several longtime allies, including the faithful Bothans. .

Battling a wave of retreating star systems, an insurmountable supply crisis, and chaos on the streets of Coruscant, the Senate has been crippled since the treaty was signed.

The bitter and divided nobility of the core worlds debate every decision, lowering the morale of already discouraged citizens. Shedding responsibility for imperial rule on the backs of the Jedi, the Senate has distanced itself from the legendary protectors of the republic.

The Jedi remain devoted to the protection of the republic, but the Jedi Council has left Coruscant, to settle on Tython, the home world of the Jedi.

The republic has formed new special forces squads, disciplined teams capable of working together with near-perfect efficiency. These elite troops still collaborate extensively with the Jedi, but on many occasions soldiers take the lead in the defense of the republic.

Despite the post-war economic depression and the continued expansion of its enemies, the spirit of the republic remains independent, courageous and strong. New leaders are emerging to fight the dark Sith Empire, liberate the galaxy, and restore the republic to its former glory.

The ambition to dominate the galaxy ...

The true origins of the Sith remain shrouded in mystery. The Sith race was insignificant until the arrival on Korriban three thousand years ago of exiled Black Jedi who subjected the Sith to their rule and philosophy.

As years passed, the Dark Jedi intermarried with those over whom they ruled, and over the generations the word "Sith" took on a new meaning. This powerful new civilization developed rapidly, led by a growing population of ambitious dark side users of the force. Fifteen hundred years later, the Sith borders reached those of the republic, and the great hyperspace war began.

The Dark Sith Lord Naga Sadow led his army in an aggressive campaign to destroy the Galactic Republic. Despite the Sith's early victories, the Jedi Order rallied to defeat their dark counterparts, destroying the Sith civilization on Korriban.

However, unbeknownst to the Jedi, the last Sith emperor managed to escape the carnage and fled into interstellar space with his most loyal black lords.

These Sith survivors set out to rebuild their society on a distant planet, hoping to one day return for revenge.

Over the next millennium, the Sith Empire regained its full power. The Emperor developed a vast military empire and a fleet of sophisticated warships, and engaged in dark rituals to prolong his life and unchallenged rule.

When the time for revenge arrived, the Sith began to infiltrate the star systems of the Outer Rim, causing discord and making secret deals with local thugs and crime lords. With all the pieces in place, the Sith launched a massive offensive that took the Jedi by surprise. The first wave was enough for the Sith to take control of several star systems on the Outer Rim, destroying the republic's yards in the Sluis sector, and cutting off the important trade route to Rimma.

After the first assault, the emperor's brilliant strategies and the devastating power of the imperial armed forces continued to strike the republic, from the deep abysses of Utapau to the immense forests of Agamar. But while the empire seemed capable of fighting indefinitely, the emperor once again took the republic in reverse.

While the Emperor's Black Council was engaged in peace talks with the republic's rulers, several Sith lords and an elite Imperial army sacked the republic's capital.

Destroying the Jedi Temple and holding the planet hostage, the Sith left the Republic no choice but to relinquish several peripheral systems by signing the Treaty of Coruscant.

Since the signing, the emperor has stepped back to pursue his mysterious goals, delegating control to the black council, and paving the way for a terrible power struggle. In the political vacuum, the strongest and most cunning Sith and Imperial rulers step forward to assume authority, consolidate the Empire's dominance, and crush its enemies.

• Built from the earliest vestiges of the Sith Empire
• The emperor is over 1300 years old
• The population of the empire is much smaller than that of the republic
• Society is divided between Sith and non-Sith

  • Bounty hunter
